The coal seam gas industry has written to the vice-chancellor of Southern Cross University, attacking research that shows high levels of methane and carbon dioxide leaking from a gasfield.

The letter accuses two researchers, Isaac Santos and Damien Maher, of sloppy work and says it is ''deeply concerning'' that the university has not publicly released all its data before the academic, peer-review process is completed.

Dr Santos and Dr Maher found large-scale gas leaks in a gasfield operated by BG Group at Tara gasfield on Queensland's western downs. The findings, contained in a submission to the federal government, suggest the industry may not have properly accounted for gas leaks, which could have implications for human health and greenhouse gas emissions.
