Koala champion calls for Qld grant boycott

Earlier this month, Environment Minister Andrew Powell made $800,000 available for the grants over the next four years, which will go to groups involved in koala rescue and rehabilitation.

The move was part of the state government's $26.5 million plan to protect the koala, which is listed as vulnerable in Queensland, NSW and the ACT.

Most of the money will be used to buy land to be set aside as koala sanctuaries.

But Australian Koala Foundation president Deborah Tabart called on groups not to accept grants until the state government stepped up its protection efforts.
